Introduction Page on the topic Design of Machine Elements (Essay Sample) Content: Design of Mechanical ElementsStudentsInstitutionDesign of Machine ElementsA gearbox is a metallic case within which a set of gears is sealed especially in a motor vehicle. It acts as a transmitter through which power is transmitted from an engine, for example in a car; power transmission from an engine to the wheels. Therefore, the primary function of a gearbox is to provide rotational energy of the engine to a rotational speed necessary for the wheels. The technology behind Gearbox arose due to the need to transfer torque to the combustion engines that powered vehicles, with the earliest form of manual transmission being invented in the late 19th century. In this project, we will examine and explore a 3-speed gearbox used in automotive vehicles. Therefore, this project aims at counting the number of teeth on all gears, identification of the types of gears present and calculation of the gear ratios. It also involves a description of the power path through the transmis sion, determination of the output shaft torque under given output condition for different speeds as well as drawing the sketch of the gearbox layout. The three speeds all synchromesh gearboxes were fitted to Holdens early 1970s. They have the usual shift pattern that is; reverse being towards and up, first towards and up, the second away and up as well as the third being away and down. This gearbox uses one activation rod for second or third and the other activation rod for first or reverse; as a result there is the use of the matching steering column. The side cover of the gearbox is held by seven bolts while five screws hold the extension holding. To add on this, the draining of this gearbox is simply done by removing the lowest and rearmost cover bolt from the offside of the gearbox. On the other hand, filling involves removing the large filler bolt in the nearside of the gearbox and then pouring in oil by use of an external funnel. Therefore in this report, we will focus on the e xploration and examination of the 3-speed gearbox as used in automotive vehicles so as to achieve the objectives named above of the report.
